  3.      3C90X Fast EtherLink XL/EtherLink XL Bus Master NIC Family
  4.      Installing a NIC for NetWare in Windows for Workgroups 3.11
  5.  
  6. IMPORTANT:  You must have either software from Novell or a version of
  7. Windows for Workgroups with NetWare support to install NetWare support
  8. for Windows for Workgroups.
  9.  
  10. For full NetWare support with Windows for Workgroups, use the NetWare 
  11. installation diskettes provided by Novell.  The installation program 
  12. will prompt you for the necessary files from the 3Com EtherDisk diskette.
  13.  
  14. The following steps describe how to install your 3Com network NIC in a 
  15. NetWare client running Windows for Workgroups 3.11 without the Novell 
  16. installation diskettes.
  17.  
  18. 1.  Ensure that the NIC has been configured properly in the computer by 
  19.     reviewing the configuration and diagnostic tests.
  20.  
  21. 2.  Use the Autolink program to install the NetWare ODI client software
  22.     in DOS.  For instructions, refer to the manual or run the HELP.EXE
  23.     file found on EtherDisk #1.
  24.  
  25. 3.  In Windows for Workgroups, locate the Network section (the Network icon).
  26.     Open the Network group and double-click Network Setup.
  27.  
  28. 4.  Click on the Networks... button in the Network Setup window.
  29.   
  30.     To install the Microsoft Network with NetWare, proceed as follows: 
  31.     a.  Choose Install Microsoft Windows Network. 
  32.     b.  Select Other:
  33.     c.  Choose either Novell NetWare[Workstation Shell 3.X] or 
  34.         Novell NetWare[Workstation Shell 4.0 and above] from the 
  35.         pull down menu.  Shell 3.X is used for NETX.EXE and Shell 4.0
  36.         is for the VLM requester.
  37.     d.  Click OK when you are finished.
  38.     e.  Continue at step 5.

  40.     To install Novell NetWare only, proceed as follows:
  41.     a.  Choose Install Windows Support for the following network only:
  42.     b.  Choose either Novell NetWare[Workstation Shell 3.X] or 
  43.         Novell NetWare[Workstation Shell 4.0 and above] from the 
  44.         pull down menu.  Shell 3.X is used for NETX.EXE and Shell 4.0
  45.         is for the VLM requester.
  46.     c.  Continue at step 14.

  48. 5.  To install the network NIC, click the Drivers... button.
  49.  
  50. 6.  In the Network Drivers window, click the Add adapter... button.
  51.  
  52. 7.  From the list of network NICs, select Unlisted or Updated Network
  53.     Adapter and then click OK.
  54.  
  55. 8.  Network setup now requires the vendor-provided network driver diskette.
  56.     Insert the EtherDisk #2 diskette in drive A: and type the following 
  57.     path for the location of the NDIS driver:
  58.     
  59.     A:\WFW311
  60.     
  61.     Click OK.
  62.  
  63. 9.  From the Unlisted or Updated Network Adapter screen, select 3Com 
  64.     Fast EtherLink XL/EtherLink XL NIC (3C90X) and click OK.

  66.     The Network Setup screen now lists the adapter, along with the 
  67.     default protocol stacks:
  68.     
  69.     3Com Fast EtherLink XL/EtherLink XL NIC (3C90X) (NDIS2/NDIS3)
  70.        IPX/SPX Compatible Transport with NetBIOS
  71.        Microsoft NetBEUI
  72.        
  73. 10. Click setup in the Network Drivers window.  
  74.  
  75. 11. Click the down arrow under Driver Type and select the ODI driver.  
  76.     Then click OK.
  77.  
  78. 12. Click Close in the Network Drivers window to accept these settings.
  79.     
  80. 13. Click OK in the Network Setup window to start the installation.

  82. 14. At this point Windows for Workgroups may give you a chance to add
  83.     or change your user name, workgroup, and computer name.  If your network
  84.     administrator supplies you this information, use it. If not, you can
  85.     create this information yourself.  When you have finished, click OK.
  86.  
  87.     NOTE: It may be necessary to use your Novell or Windows for Workgroups
  88.           network support diskettes during the installation.  Later versions
  89.           of NetWare include a file that Windows for Workgroups will not
  90.           copy for you.  If you get an error stating that NWGDI.DLL is
  91.           missing, you must copy the file manually into the SYSTEM 
  92.           subdirectory of your WINDOWS directory.
  93.  
  94. 15. The Windows Setup program may ask if you want to replace the Enhanced 
  95.     Mode Protocol Manager or your Novell NetWare files with the version 
  96.     you are installing now. Click Yes to All.
  97.  
  98. 16. If the Windows Setup program asks for the NDIS.386 file,  insert
  99.     Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.11 Disk 7 and click OK.

  101. 17. If prompted for the EL90X.386 driver, insert the 3Com EtherDisk #2
  102.     diskette in the A:\ drive. Type the following path to load the 
  103.     NDIS 3 driver:

  105.     A:\WFW311
  106.     
  107.     Click OK.
  108.  
  109. 18. If prompted for the EL90X.DOS driver, insert the 3Com EtherDisk 1
  110.     diskette in the A:\ drive. Type the following path to load the 
  111.     NDIS 2 driver:

  113.     A:\NDIS2\DOS
  114.     
  115.     Click OK.
  116.  
  117. 19. The PROTOCOL.INI and SYSTEM.INI files have now been modified. Windows
  118.     for Workgroups saves the old versions with the extension .001, where 
  119.     the number is incremented every time a new version of the file is
  120.     generated. Click OK.
  121.  
  122. 20. When prompted, restart the computer.
